This is absolutely true. IPL has become a sport festival in India. It has its benefits but at the same time it has brought down attention to other sports lesser compared to time before IPL was introduced. It's impacting aspiring new players who could've become badminton player, TT player, athletics, etc.
Agreed! However, I think that's changing. Names like PV Sindhu, Neeraj Chopra and Gukesh D are becoming household names. This is great, as aspriring players in other sports have someone to look up to :)
That's true. More number of people are watching olympic games.
My issue is with this -
If you look at countries like Japan, China and USA who has their own national game Baseball, table tennis (not declared..just popularity) and American Football which they Excel and has their share of economy based off it but they also Excel at other sports as well, winning all international championships. We being the most populated country on planet just have 1 game whole nation is obsessed about and that game isn't even in Olympics 😂.
Sifar you have written good article...your language and points are accurate. Keep it up !!!
Cricket will be in the Olympics soon! LA 28 will have cricket in it. But yes, I do agree with your overall point. The sporting cultures in countries such as Australia is absolutely great; people there are interested in many different types of sports. I can see a shift happening in the sports landscape of India, and hopefully Indian people show more interest in other sports as well. Leagues like the Pro Kabaddi League (the 2nd most watched domestic sports league in India) are a big step towards that!
Dear Sifar, another good piece of writing. All the stats given are valuable and help to see the larger picture. I admire your passion for the game, and your aspirations for Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings!! I want to bring up the idea of "limits of growth" and discuss it with you when you are back on campus!! Also please post the subscription fee in INR. Thanks and well done
Thank you for the kind words ma'am! I would love to discuss that with you.
I'm not going to be enabling subscriptions for this particular publication. However, I am shortlisting some NGOs who are doing great work in Pune and across the whole country who I want to help using the blogs. Will keep you updated :)
